Frequently asked questions

Therapy [psychotherapy] is the process of working with a qualified therapist to develop coping skills and positive thinking. It is a way of getting help and support when going through difficulties or when facing life challenges.

A good therapist will listen and ask questions about your views, help you reflect on yourself or the situations you are in, and assist you in gaining access to your own feelings about certain situations. They will listen and work in collaboration with you, and may also recommend techniques for problem solving and use certain exercises or tasks to help the thought process.

Therapy is most often a short-term process that may be deemed complete with as few as six or eight sessions. Those who enter therapy will set a specific goal or area of change after discussion with their therapist. Changes will be reviewed together along the way and you will come to an agreement as to when it is time to end the therapy.

All of HeadFloss’ therapists are fully qualified. A therapist is someone with a Masters’ degree or Doctorate degree in their core discipline or area of study. They are usually psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists or nurses. On top of this, a therapist has a further postgraduate MA or MSc in one of the schools of therapy*. In other words, a therapist has been extensively trained to practice therapy. They are not only educated in therapy techniques or models but have completed therapy sessions under the careful eye of a supervisor who has overseen their skills to make certain they are appropriate and they follow the strict guidelines established for becoming qualified. (*The most common schools of therapy are Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy or Systemic Family Therapy)

Our HeadFloss therapists are mainly trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or Systemic Family Therapy;

Cognitive Behavioural therapy (CBT) understands that our thoughts and behaviours affect one another. During a CBT session, a therapist will help a client understand any negative thought patterns they may have and aim to help the client to get out of this thought spiral. The aim is to teach a client how negative thoughts affect them and, most importantly, what can be done to change them.

Systemic Therapy is an approach that works with families, couples and individuals in a relational context. Systemic therapy helps a client identify unhelpful patterns of behaviour and look at how they are affected by their relationships or the wider context. The aim of this form of therapy is to enable individuals to change by recognising their own patterns of behaviours and by encouraging them to empathise with others around them (insight based therapy). Systemic therapy aims to build on strengths and resilience and uses solution-focused techniques to create change.

HeadFloss wants to improve your chances of getting support quickly, and online is the easiest way for both you and your therapist to connect without delay. Being online means we don’t have to be restricted to office hours when it can be difficult for you to get away; we can speak to you during evenings and weekends as well.

Not only is online therapy more convenient to access, but it has also been proven to be just as effective – sometimes more so – than traditional face-to-face therapy. Many people feel safer and more comfortable talking to someone if they can stay at home and when they have the time and space to talk.

When you’re ready to book a session, use our enquiry form to fill in your details and let us know a convenient time for you. We will then get in touch via e-mail, where you will be asked to confirm your session and make your payment. Once your payment is accepted, you will get a confirmation e-mail and your session is in the diary.

HeadFloss use Skype for our therapy sessions. All you need is a Skype ID and your therapist will connect with you at your confirmed time.

You can choose if you want to have the live video on or if you prefer just to speak without the camera.

All of our therapists follow strict rules about client confidentiality to ensure that what you tell them stays between the two of you. The privacy and safety of our clients is always our first priority. Our technology is fully HIPAA compliant and it is important to us that you feel safe and secure using our service. Please refer to our code of ethics and read our full privacy policy for more information.

Therapy online is not a good idea if you are experiencing an acute mental health episode or persisting suicidal ideation. This is for your own safety.

If you find yourself in those circumstances, we advise you to seek urgent help by attending your nearest A&E. Please speak to a family member or friend, too.
